How can I deter pigeons from my bird feeder?

How can I deter pigeons from eating all the bird food which I put out for the little **** and sparrows and such, not these massive flying rats. I have tried moving the feeder basket thingies around, but those pesky pigeons manage to find a way! any ideas that won't scare off the nice birds and doesn't cost the earth?
