Why does my dog bark at "nothing"?

my dog, max, has a habit of looking out the window on the couch, on some nights he would stare outside and growl and bark. its quite different from when he barks at other dogs because he has a like a whine and saddish tone to it cuz we wont let him near the other dogs cuz of his hormones. any reasons why it may be? (specific)
